Care and Maintenance
All chopping boards sold on our website are made from high quality, raw hardwood timber that have been finished with a coat of food-safe oil. They are not coated with any type of veneer, stain or varnish as this would be unsuitable for food preparation.
Timber in it's raw , natural state has the ability to not only absorb water but to also store water. It is therefore important not to submerge your chopping board in water or put it in a dishwasher. Instead, immediately after use, scrub your board with a warm soapy cloth on both sides of the board. Dry thoroughly with a clean tea towel ensuring all water on the surface is dried off.
Keep your chopping board away from heat or direct sunlight as this can cause your chopping board to warp, twist or swell through a natural process called thermal expansion. Store your board on it's edge in a cool, dry place. Do not store your chopping board flat as this can cause the board to warp.
Every month or so, after thoroughly cleaning and drying your board, it is a good idea to re-oil your chopping board. Only use a food-safe oil such as Grape Seed Oil which is commonly available from your local supermarket. Just pour a very small amount, about the size of a 20 cent coin onto the board and rub it in with your hand. Do this to both sides and all edges of the board. Do not use any vegetable oil as vegetable oil will go rancid. Also do not use any other types of oil unless it is marked "food-safe".
Baking soda can be used to remove any stubborn stains from your chopping. Sprinkle a little baking soda over the offensive spot and rub with a clean cloth, brush, or sponge dipped in hot water.
If your chopping board begins to smell, an easy solution is to rub half a lemon across the entire surface of the board. The ascorbic acid from the lemon reacts with any organic material such as bacteria and fats that are the cause of the smells.
If your CustomCraft chopping board is maintained regularly, it will last for many years.
