CustomCraft Australia makes hardwood boards and furniture to order, in a small workshop in Goulburn, in the NSW Southern Tablelands.

Made to your measure

Most board makers sell you the sizes they happen to make. We start from the size you actually need — the gap beside your cooktop, the width of your island, the board that has to fit a particular drawer. Our Board Builder lets you set the dimensions, timber, edge profile and engraving yourself, and shows you the price as you go, rather than asking you to email for a quote and wait.

The workshop

Everything is made here, by us. We run a CNC router and a laser alongside conventional machinery, which is what makes one-off sizes and precise engraving practical to do properly rather than as an expensive exception. Each piece is cut, glued, flattened, profiled, sanded and finished in the same workshop.

Timber

We work in both Australian and imported hardwoods, and we would rather be straight with you about which is which. Australian species include Tasmanian blackwood, acacia, Australian oak and reclaimed redgum. Imported species include American hard maple, walnut and cherry. We also keep a small range of feature timbers — purpleheart, padauk, osage orange and tigerwood — for accent strips and inlays.

Because we use both, we do not describe our boards as "Australian timber" across the board. What we will say is that every one of them is made in our Goulburn workshop.

Natural variation

Timber is a natural material. Grain, figure and colour vary between boards of the same species, and colour will shift over time as the timber responds to light. Photographs show representative pieces, not the exact board you will receive. We think that variation is the point of buying something made from a tree rather than pressed from a sheet.

Built to last

These are made to be used daily and to be repairable. End-grain construction, food-safe finishes, and joinery chosen so a board can be re-flattened and re-oiled years from now instead of thrown out.
